Outreach and Partnerships

As the only accredited forestry program in New Mexico, FORS enjoys strong collaborative ties throughout the State and beyond. The FRC is the largest producer of high-quality forest tree seedlings in the Southwest, producing seedlings for post-fire restoration efforts for state, tribal, and federal lands. The FRC is also involved in forestry research efforts with other experiment stations at NMSU, the National Park Service, private industry, USDA-Forest Service, and other universities around the country.  The federal legislation that authorized FWRI and its sister Institutes established collaboration as one of its principle roles and duties. FWRI controls no land and makes no policy. All of its activities rely on collaboration, often with local groups. In recent years, FWRI has taken a lead in developing long-term, large-scale strategies for watershed restoration. It is actively involved with collaborative groups in all forested areas of New Mexico.

Furthermore, the opportunities for research and education provided by FORT will contribute directly to community outreach and education programs. By increasing visibility of scientific research, these programs will improve ecological literacy and promote responsible environmental stewardship for professional and the lay public, as well as for K-12 teachers and students.  FORT will also help collaborative community groups in forested areas that bring together stakeholders and decision-makers to make land management choices that represent the full range of interests and values and that increase the potential for long-term sustainability on resilient landscapes.
